Unlimited Access
“Dancing is a universal language. I loved learning about dance and life in the Unlimited Access Dance Workshop for people with and without disabilities. Inspired by the Unlimited Festival that was organised in 2012 in the context of the London Cultural Olympiad and under the initiative of the British Council (UK), four organisations have pooled their resources in order to accomplish an ambitious programme. As the title suggests, the Unlimited Access programme aims to develop best practices regarding the commission, creation and presentation of performing arts productions engaging disabled people.

For the Onassis Cultural Centre, that already develops similar activities in the context of its educational programs, it was a natural decision to participate in this network involving the British Council (UK), Vo’Arte (Portugal) and the Croatian Institute for Movement and Dance (Croatia). In the context of the programme, the Onassis Cultural Centre, in cooperation with the British Council and the other partners, delivers an extended series of educational programs and workshops for contemporary dance based on the participation of people with and without disabilities from Greece and abroad. Indeed, one of these programs aims at the formation of a mixed group that will cooperate with new choreographers for the production of new performances. The programme Unlimited Access includes the realization of performing arts festivals in each country, culminating in an international festival in February 2015, in Athens.”

The programme had two main objectives:

  • To develop infrastructures, methodologies and practices that remove the obstacles faced by disabled people, whether as artists or as audience members, and furthermore to support the cooperation and the mobility of groups and artists.
  • To change the way disabled artists are treated in the domain of culture. With this in mind the programme will look into, not so much the rights of these artists but rather, the game changing value of their work that provides a unique perspective and experience of the world.
